Day Habilitation

Day Habilitation Services (DH) are provided in Acorn’s Day Hab Center, which now boasts two locations. The original Acorn Day Hab is located at 15160 Bellaire Boulevard in Houston (adjacent to the main office). The Cypress Day Hab, located at 13111 Vernon Road in Cypress Day Hab, offers opportunities for outdoor recreational and educational activities and real-life household instruction to teach cooking, cleaning, gardening, and more. Staff provide instruction, supervision, and supports to people served in classrooms and activity areas.   

 

DH includes the following service elements:

  1. assisting individuals in acquiring, retaining, and improving self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills necessary to reside successfully in the community;

  2. providing individuals with age-appropriate activities that enhance self-esteem and maximize functional level;

  3. complementing any professional therapies listed in the IPC;

  4. reinforcing skills or lessons taught in school, therapy, or other settings;

  5. training and support activities that promote the individual's integration and participation in the community;

  6. providing assistance for the individual who cannot manage personal care needs during day habilitation activities; and

  7. providing transportation during day habilitation activities as necessary for the individual's participation in day habilitation activities.

Day Hab at Acorn also includes recreational activities in a variety of settings to assist people with community integration and socialization skills at:

  • Local community parks

  • Movie theaters

  • Zoos

  • Museums

  • Day trips to area attractions, such as:

    • Kemah Boardwalk

    • Galveston

    • Professional Athletic Events

    • Community Church Programs
